The New Canada Games Complex

A major part of this pillar of the Forever CBU campaign is the expansion and renovation of the Canada Games Complex. This project includes the creation of convocation, conference, and event space, a campus and community fitness center, expansion of the Nancy Dingwall Health and Counselling Centre, studios for yoga, spin and dance and a walking track.

This project also includes a full retrofit of the ice surface to NHL-size and will see increased accessibility for sledge hockey and other para-sports. This space will also become Canada’s Home of Female Hockey, empowering girls and women to thrive in the sport. Construction has already begun. Read about the official groundbreaking ceremony here.

Our physical health and mental health investment priorities include an enriched Health and Counselling Centre, new and expanded medical services and treatment spaces, investment in support staff and medical professionals, and expanded recreation programming including new indoor and outdoor spaces for learning and mindfulness.

Investing In Arts, Recreation & Sport

CBU and Cape Breton Island have a long history of world-class performing arts and a legacy of sports excellence. With support from our donors, alumni, and friends like you, we will build on this legacy through the expansion, creation, and investment in facilities, spaces, and programming.

Enhanced Outdoor Recreation Spaces
Outdoor recreation space enhancements include a reimaging of our Campus Walking Trail, new opportunities for outdoor classrooms, creative arts performance space, and further engagement in Indigenous culture. University soccer field improvements will provide a better student and fan experience. We will also create an 18-hole disc golf course for year-round use, and Cape Breton’s first official cricket field.

Refurbished Sullivan Field House
The refurbished Sullivan Field House will offer expanded recreational programming and become the permanent home to the Caper’s Hall of Fame – a dedicated physical space that will recognize and honour those who have contributed to the CAPERS athletics program.

Revitalization and Expansion of the Cape Breton Health and Recreation Complex (The Dome)
Updates include a new modern, state-of-the-art dome structure so that university and island-wide participants from a variety of sports can stay active all year long.

Focus on Creative Arts
Creative Arts activities play an important role in providing a well rounded and memorable student life experience. Through the use of creative expression, students are able to apply creative solutions and problem solving during their studies, and once they leave CBU. CBU has a history of drama and creative arts as old as the institution itself. We want to continue that history in a meaningful and unforgettable way.

Through the support of our donors, students will experience organic and experiential learning through the creative arts and build a strong foundation for further exploration and application in other disciplines. The establishment of an Artist in Residence program will mentor and guide students in focus areas such as writing, performance, studio art and music.
