Sharon Morrison Memorial Award Established
The Cape Breton Down Syndrome Society (CBDSS), along with the Morrison Family of Sydney River have proudly established the Sharon Morrison Memorial Award to support a student with Down Syndrome who enrolls in the CBU Inclusive Program. Dr. Lynn LeVatte, President of the CBDSS and Assistant Professor at CBU, says it was important to have this award dedicated to Sharon Morrison, an inspirational community educator who supported inclusion for all learners.
After retiring from her career as an educator, Sharon continued to work as a resource teacher and volunteered regularly with the CBDSS, providing support for many educational initiatives during her time. Sharon passed away in 2019 and is remembered fondly for her dedication to developing continued education opportunities for students with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.
“Sharon felt it necessary that all students regardless of abilities have post-secondary experiences,” says Dr. LeVatte. “It is a great memorial to name this award in her honour.”
Sharon and Dr. LeVatte worked together to craft the idea for the CBU Inclusive Program, bringing the program to reality in 2019. The program is open to students who self-identify as having a disability and do not meet the admission criteria set for credit study. Now, Sharon’s legacy will live on as students of all abilities experience University life at CBU.
Criteria and additional information about the Sharon Morrison Memorial Award can be requested by contacting the Jennifer Keeping Centre or the CBDSS.
