My CBU Story: Elizabeth Fraser

Nov 01, 2021

When you grow up from the age of seven walking the halls of Cape Breton University, it’s only natural that it eventually becomes your university of choice. That’s what happened for Coxheath’s Elizabeth Fraser, daughter of former CBU employee Lynda Moffatt. Elizabeth became a CBU student in 2016 and is about to graduate with her Master of Business Administration in Community Economic Development.

Elizabeth pursued her MBA while working full time with Nova Scotia Health and says the flexible class schedule and educational programming at CBU fit her needs perfectly. “CBU has given me the skills I need to be an effective leader within my role in the organization,” she says. “My experience has encouraged me to continue my education and enhance my abilities to continuously foster professional growth.”

During her time at CBU, Elizabeth was supported by professors like Dr. Catherine Leviten-Reid, Associate Professor of Community Economic Development, who introduced her to concepts she has been able to apply to her own life. She says instructors Garry Leech and Richard Watuwa opened her eyes to new concepts through unique and inclusive teaching methods. “The subject matter in my classes was relevant to current issues and I loved learning about present events and ways I could actively help improve my community,” says Elizabeth.

Elizabeth would like to thank her husband, Andrew, for his continued support. “He has watched my boys so I could attend classes, made sure I had time to study and supported me when I was worried or stressed,” she says. “He is my rock and this degree is just as much his as it is mine. I would not have been able to accomplish this goal without his help.”

To those considering coming to CBU, Elizabeth says make your move. “I was concerned about a home and work life balance, but I felt fully supported by CBU as a mature student,” says Elizabeth. “CBU gives you the option to live and study on a beautiful island and provides an opportunity to engage with different cultures from around the globe.”

In closing, Elizabeth says although she will miss her time at CBU, learning is a lifelong endeavour she intends to continue. “I have walked the halls of CBU since I was a child,” she says. “This place feels like part of my life story and I am beyond proud to be part of the CBU Alumni family.”
