CBU's Verschuren Centre receives provincial funding of $2.4 million to help commercialize fisheries waste to product initiative
The Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment has been awarded a $2.4-million provincial investment to help with the commercialization of technology that turns marine by-products into commercial products for the feed, plant and food industries.
The money comes from Invest Nova Scotia, an independent fund established in 2014, and set up by the province for the purpose of granting economic incentives designed to spark measurable and sustainable innovation in Nova Scotia.
The research project started when the Centre received funding for the pilot-scale equipment through the ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). The process, which is the first of its kind in North America, was developed and tested with the equipment designed to effectively take leftovers from the fishing industry and turn this marine biomass into commercially viable products. This additional funding over the next three years will help with the commercialization of the project to the end market while supporting the fisheries industry to divert its waste in a clean and efficient manner.
